5.3L Gen 4 LS Swap & Rebuild: DOD/AFM Delete & Competition Cam Upgrade

5.3L Gen 4 LS Swap & Rebuild: DOD/AFM Delete & Competition Cam Upgrade

Swapping a worn-out Gen 4 5.3L LS with DOD/AFM for a fully rebuilt Gen 4 5.3L LS with a DOD/AFM delete, competition cam, and fresh internals is a great way to enhance reliability and performance. This swap will be documented daily with progress updates, time expectations, and steps along the way.

Day 1: Engine Removal Begins

Just a couple of hours in, and we’re making solid progress pulling the hurt LS. Here’s what’s been done so far:

Step 1: Prepping for Removal (1-2 hours)

✅ Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical mishaps.
✅ Drain the coolant and oil.
✅ Label and disconnect wiring harnesses, fuel lines, and vacuum hoses.
✅ Remove the radiator, intake, and accessories (alternator, power steering, A/C compressor).

Step 2: Separating the Engine from the Transmission (1-2 hours)

✅ Unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate.
✅ Support the transmission and remove the bellhousing bolts.
✅ Unbolt the motor mounts.

At this point, the engine is almost ready to be pulled, and tomorrow’s focus will be getting it out and prepping for the fresh LS.

What’s Next?

🔧 Pulling the engine.
🔧 Inspecting components for reuse.
🔧 Preparing the rebuilt 5.3L for installation.

Stay tuned for daily updates on the swap!
