The 5-Minute “Oklahoma Road-Wear” Checklist
1. The “Bounce Test”
Walk to each corner of your vehicle and push down firmly on the hood or trunk with both hands.
- The Goal: The car should bounce up once and settle immediately.
- The Red Flag: If the car continues to oscillate or “jiggles” more than twice, your shocks or struts are likely worn out and unable to dampen the impact of those I-35 potholes.
2. The Tire “Feathering” Scan
Run your hand across the tread of your front tires.
- The Goal: The rubber should feel smooth in both directions.
- The Red Flag: If the tread feels sharp or “saw-toothed” in one direction (known as feathering), your alignment is off. This is a classic sign that your suspension has been knocked out of spec by rough road surfaces.
3. The Visual “Wet Look”
Take a flashlight and look behind your wheels at the vertical metal cylinders (your shocks or struts).
- The Goal: They should look dry and dusty.
- The Red Flag: If they look oily, wet, or have “grime” sticking to them in a thick layer, the internal hydraulic fluid is leaking. Once that fluid is gone, the shock is a paperweight.
4. The Steering Wheel “Clock”
Find a flat, straight stretch of road (if you can find one in Edmond!) and briefly center your wheel.
- The Goal: When the car is going straight, the logo on the steering wheel should be perfectly level.
- The Red Flag: If you have to hold the wheel at “11 o’clock” or “1 o’clock” to keep the car from drifting into the next lane, your tie rods or control arms have likely taken a hit.
5. The “Curb Check” for Rims
Check the very edge of your metal rims where they meet the tire.
- The Goal: A smooth, circular edge.
- The Red Flag: Look for flat spots or “lip” bends. Even a small bend in a rim can cause a vibration at highway speeds that eventually destroys your wheel bearings.
